About Us

Location, Location, Location
In the Thames Valley, Staines sits to the West of London on the River Thames. Just a few miles upstream from Staines-upon-Thames is
Windsor Castle. The River Wey joins the Thames just down river. One can cruise up to Guildford. Slough just about ten miles. It is safe to say the Staines and District serves Middlesex, Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire.

Our History
It seems that there has been an Orthodox Jewish community in Staines/Egham since at least 1939. We are advised that there were three Yeshivot probably around the time of the start of World War II (1939). Perhaps a little earlier because it seemed to also cater for young person’s escaping the Nazis.
There was a Yeshiva based in Thorpe Lea House in Egham. The official name was ‘Staines Jewish Theological College’, or ‘Yeshiva Torat Chaim’. It was run by the Orthodox charity Agudas Israel. There were
two others in Staines at the Limes, Church Street and one in Fairfield Avenue. Several members now aging, remember attending cheder at one or another of one of these. It is understood there was a Lieger Rov, Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Weingarten was the Rosh Yeshiva of the Church Street Yeshiva.
Escaping the ravages of the blitz many escaped to the safety of Staines.
It appears there were many families who congregated and at least from 1940 there was a sizeable Jewish community. It might have been known as “Staines, Egham and District United Synagogue Membership
Group”.

Our Community Today
Now in 2024 there are the remnants of the original group and others who have in the interim become members of the AFFILIATED United Synagogue.
Integrity, inclusivity, and innovation are at the core of everything we do. We are committed to upholding these values as we serve our community and work towards a brighter future.
